Solid paraffin or paraffin wax is a white solid consisting of a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons. Since paraffin is derived from crude oil, it is also known as petroleum-based wax. This compound is not soluble in water, but it is soluble in organic compounds such as benzene, ether, etc.
Although paraffin wax has various uses in industries such as lubrication, insulation and softening, it is most commonly used for making candles and also during beauty treatments such as manicures. Paraffin wax is a better insulator than other materials except some plastics.
